Pool B match Chinese Taipei vs Korea
The second day’s action began with a pool B clash between Chinese Taipei and highly fancied Korea.
With the game played in much cooler conditions than the opening day, Korea ran out comfortable winners by 7 goals to nil at the final whistle. But the score would have been a lot higher but for an impressive Taipei defence that stubbornly kept out the Korean forwards for long periods.
Korea did not look like the same side that hammered New Zealand 6-0 in a friendly prior to the tournament and led only by a 2-0 nil margin at half time with the opening goal coming from Cheon Seul Ki in the 4th minute via a penalty corner.
The second half saw the same trend continuing with Korea besieging the Taipei goal which was rewarded in the 38th minute through a field goal also scored by Cheon.
But Taipei’s defence still caused problems as they packed their goal area denying the waves of Korean attacks. With the expected avalanche of goals failing to materialise anxiety began to creep into the Korean play as the team failed to take advantage numerous penalty corners forced in the second half with shots either going wide of or over the top of the net.
Again it was Cheon Seul Ki who picked up the scoring with four field goals in the second half , the last coming almost at the final whistle which brought her match tally to five.
While Taipei had few scoring chances, centre half Su Pei Ling had several determined runs down the middle to worry the Korean defence.
Kim Mi Seon rounded up Korea’s scoring with a field goal in the 66th minute.
