Match 3 : Hong Kong vs Chinese Taipei Pool B.
This evening Hong Kong scored their first win of the tournament with a pulsating 2-1 pool B victory over Chinese Taipei in a clash between the two youngest sides of the competition.
With both Hong Kong goals coming in a rather damp and rainy first half through penalty corners converted by Lo I Ka and Yip Ting Wai n the 19th and 26th minutes respectively, Chinese Taipei was always going to have an uphill battle to come back into an evenly balanced contest.
The second half saw Chinese Taipei mount numerous attacks on the Hong Kong goal as the match seesawed to and fro with the hosts’ defence holding firm.
And it was only in the 68th minute that Chinese Taipei was awarded a penalty stroke after a fracas in the Hong Kong circle when a defender fouled a Chinese Taipei attacker about to shoot for goal. The stroke was converted by Lin Yi Ching, who had Hong Kong goalkeeper Queenie Ho going the wrong way, to make the score 2-1 to the hosts.
Both teams have qualified for Saturday’s classification matches with Hong Kong, 3rd in pool B, playing Thailand who finished 4th in pool A. Chinese Taipei has mountain to climb against Malaysia , 3rd placed in pool A.
Singapore, without a win in pool A ,finished 5th and failed to make the crossovers.
