6th Asia Cup Women’s Hockey Championship – Korea vs Hong Kong ( 18 : 0 )
Match Review <official match report>
Day 3
Pool B, Korea vs Hong Kong.
Cup dark horses Korea this evening, 3rd September, gave notice that they had fully recovered from yesterday’s mini stumble, when they only managed 7 goals against lowly Chinese Taipei, to demolish Hong Kong with a record breaking 18-0 win in a pool B fixture.
Korea’s remarkable effort was a mixture of sheer pace and power as the squad literally ran the young and inexperienced Hong Kong squad ragged from the opening whistle.
The match was in complete contrast to the earlier pool A encounter which saw India put on an exhibition of hockey finesse against Thailand that included superb stickwork and interpassing play with a number of goals coming from reverse stick flicks and hits.
With high scoring the order of the day in fixtures between the top four sides in the tournament, China, Japan, Korea and India, and the inexperienced lower ranked sides, points difference will come into contention when the cross over classification matches get underway on Saturday.
Certainly Korea would be looking to face India then rather than China.
Korea started tonight’s match at a furious pace with the opening goal coming in the 3rd minute through a field goal by captain Kim Jin Kyoung.
And that was the order of the day as Korea never let up during the entire 70 minutes of non-stop action that kept Hong Kong goalkeepers Queenie Ho and Dora Lau extremely busy.
With the half time score 9-0 in Korea’s favour, the crack East Asian side continued their ferocious assault on the Hong Kong goal with the only issue being whether or not they would better India’s 16-0 win over Thailand.
That record was broken in the 68th minute when Oh Seon Soon converted a penalty corner that was followed a minute later through a field goal by Park Mi Hyun to give Korea their 18-0 win.
Result: Korea 16 (goal scorers: Cheon Seul Ki 5; Kim Jin Kyoung 4; Park Mi Hyun 3; Park Seon Mi; Kim Jong Eun; Kim Dae Rae; Han Hye Lyoung; Kim Mi Seon; Oh Seon Soon) : Hong Kong 0
